Friday Flashback: Unexpected Returns

After last week’s site update included a story continuation that came a full three years after the previous chapter (“A Fucking God,” the first two parts of which were posted in 2020) and another resumption last month after 4 and a half years, I though it would be fun to do a Friday Flashback listing stories with the longest gaps between updates.

The lacunae range from over 15 years at the high end (“Big Little Rich Boy”, “Island Duty”, “Robby's New Legs”) to roughly four-year gaps at the lower end of this rendition (“Sean Goes to Prison”, “Hyper Active Imagination”). As a writer I’ve gone back to my old stories a lot—if I fully included my own stuff, this review would be two-thirds me at least—so I’m only listing a few of the more egregious BRK resumption gaps: “The Box”, 14 years; “Needham High Mavericks”, 12 years; and a couple others from the 8+ years range.

(For the record, I’m excluding a handful of stories where I discovered and tacked on missing chapters long after I’d previously posted the first chapter or two (e.g., “The Lost Temple of Shar’hradar”), though there may be cases where I’ve misremembered whether that was the case and erroneously included or excluded accordingly. Hey, this isn’t being published in the Lancet or anything. I’m just doing my usual thing of gaily crunching the occasionally weird numbers buried in my increasingly extensive database of prurient and provocative pablum.)
