Tre had finished with the line up at the police station. He had identified the men who had beaten up Ky and Zach. It wasn’t difficult—he had seen them very clearly, knew their scent and had tasted each and every one of them when he gulped them down in a rage. The thought of what they did started driving him to anger even now...
“Tre, have you got a minute?” a familiar voice broke Tre out of his thoughts.
“Sure, Vlad,” Tre replied, “is there something else you need?”
“Actually,” the young vampire constable replied, “it’s a bit of an odd one for you...”
Tre followed Vlad through the police station to the interview rooms. Most of the doors were open, but one was closed.
“Okay,” Vlad explained, “this is an odd one.
“We got a call from the Avondale Port Customs Checkpoint this morning. Turns out there was a bit of a suspicious package on its way to the MultiTours resort.”
Tre nodded, but wondered what this had to do with him.
“It turns out that there was actually a person squeezed into this tiny package,” Vlad continued. “Well, a multi, actually.
“We picked up the parcel and brought it here to be opened. We looked at the delivery address and it was somewhere in Germany.”
“Germany?” Tre asked. “You mean he’s been in that package all the way from Germany?”
“Yip,” Vlad answered, “and it was sent by the cheapest route possible, so he’s probably been in there for days, if not over a week.”
“And he’s still alive?” Tre asked.
“I hope so,” Vlad answered, “because he’s sitting in one of our chairs right now.”
Seeing the look on Tre’s face, Vlad realised that he might not be in the mood to appreciate sarcasm at the moment.
“Anyway,” Vlad swiftly carried on, “he does seem to be shaken quite a bit. I’ve sent a message to the Avonkirk Institute to see if they can send a counsellor down.”
“So, what do you need me for?” Tre asked.
“The poor guy doesn’t seem to speak a word of English,” Vlad answered, “and beyond that I only have Ancient Transylvanian, which very few people speak as it is.”
“Right,” Tre nodded, “I’d be happy to help. Do you know when the counsellor is getting here?”
“Should be here in a few minutes,” Vlad replied.
“Okay,” Tre breathed, “just send them in when they get here. I’ll go in and say hello...”
Tre opened the door and quickly scanned the room. It was a plain room with three empty seats, a table which had a small open parcel on it and a fourth seat in which a naked tall multiguy was sitting. Tre quickly glanced between the small parcel and the tall man—he must be over 11 feet tall, Tre thought. Wonder what drove him to post himself in a box that looks no bigger than 12x12x12 inches...
The tall stranger was exceptionally well built, with at least two dozen abs and a soft cock that passed his knees. His expression was stand-off ish—that’s to be expected in a situation like this, thought Tre. Poor guy must be wondering what the hell is going on...
[In German] “Greetings,” Tre said, clearing his throat, “My name is Tre. What is your name?”
The stranger’s expression softened on hearing his native tongue.
[In German] “My name is Oskar,” replied the stranger. His voice was deep and had a smooth quality to it.
Tre extended his lower right hand towards the muscular guy. Oskar looked at it, noticing the extra thumb and finger, taking a few seconds to look over Tre’s body. He stood up and took the strange hand in his own. Tre felt a strength behind the shake but didn’t detect any signs of intimidation.
Suddenly, there was a tap on the door. Slowly it opened, and another man walked in. Although not as tall as either of the occupants currently in the interview room, the new man was well above average height for a norm.
“Hi,” the youthful voice said, “my name is Oliver. I’m from the Avonkirk Institute.”
He extended a hand in welcome, and Tre extended one of his right hands to meet it.
“I’m Tre,” Tre said, accepting the welcome, “and this young man is Oskar.”
Tre indicated with one of his hands and Oliver held his hand out for the taller man.
“So,” Oliver started, with Tre translating for Oskar, “as I mentioned, I am from the Avonkirk Institute where I’m a counsellor specialising in multis.”
Oskar looked confused at the word.
“Hmmm,” Tre hummed, “maybe they use a different word in Austria.”
Tre turned to Oskar and explained what multi meant.
[In German] “You mean freaks,” Oskar said softly, lowering his head, “like me...”
“Even I understood that,” Oliver said, a sadness to his voice. He motioned to Tre, asking him to continue translating.
“You are not a freak,” Oliver said, with a determined tone. “In Avonkirk, we have an entire community of multis of all shapes and sizes. They are welcomed here, and we celebrate the differences between us, as they all contribute to the whole body of the community. Nobody will judge you based on your body shape. I am a multi myself and I have never, ever been treated any differently to my norm friends or colleagues.
“If that is what you were called before, then I feel sorry for the people who labelled you like that. They lack compassion, and that means that they are not whole themselves. Here you are safe.”
On the word ‘safe’, Oskar looked up. He had tears in his eyes.
“Please Oskar,” Oliver continued, “I am here to help you. But to do that, I need you to tell me how you’ve ended up in Avonkirk....”
[Flashback to an Army Barracks in Austria...]
The green bus stopped outside the accommodation block. 40 recruits stepped out carrying in their small bags. They looked on in wonder at the dilapidated building in front of them.
“Surely this can’t be where we are living?” one of the recruits asked.
“It’s the 2040s and the Army still has barracks that look like they haven’t been touched since the Empire,” another snorted.
“Silence!”
The recruits all turned towards the high-pitched voice. A small man stood in uniform. His face was blank and expressionless, save for a slight smile, but his eyes burned with a cruelty that the recruits would soon come to know.
“From this moment on, if you so much as breathe in my presence without my permission, I will beat you to within an inch of your life,” the man said, his voice oozing with hatred. “I am Sergeant Zimmermann and I will be your Recruit Instructor. To you, I am God himself. Our honourable president has decreed that you will become soldiers of the √ñsterreichische Demokratische Republik—I will make you soldiers, or I will make you corpses.”
So began their conscript training. For the first two weeks, the recruits were all run into the ground, marched until they collapsed, beaten until they were bruised. They were treated worse than caged animals, fed gruel, their spirits broken by the constant torment.
Except Oskar...
Despite everything that was thrown at the young man, he seemed to have an endless supply of energy. When the others collapsed into a heap at the end of a 20-mile march, Oskar hadn’t even broken a sweat. When the others had cuts and scars from the constant race over the assault course, or bruised from the beatings that the Sergeant and his Corporals gave them on a daily basis, Oskar still had blemish free skin. Something just seemed odd about him.
This didn’t go unnoticed by either the Sergeant or the other recruits. It wasn’t long before the other recruits started to turn on him, encouraged by the Sergeant. All but Karl...
Karl was a young man from a town similar to Oskar’s. He was also the only person in the entire troop who would speak to Oskar. In each other, they found the strength to go on—Karl taking solace from Oskar’s ‘just keep going’ attitude, and Oskar taking comfort from Karl’s companionship. It was Karl who started to notice the changes that Oskar was undergoing...
It started off slowly at first, with Karl noticing that Oskar was getting taller. Karl was 5 foot 9 inches tall and looked over the Oskar’s head. But one day he noticed that he was staring into Oskar’s eyes. Karl was confused but found the reason why in the evening shower.
The recruits had all been quite thin before they had begun the conscript training—an effect of the government’s rationing policy that had begun to starve the nation after closing trade with most of their neighbours. The Army had at least given them three meals a day, and with the added exercise the boys had started to fill out with muscle. Oskar had an impressive set of abs, but then so did almost everyone else in the troop.
As they all stood naked in the communal shower, Karl noticed that Oskar’s tight six pack had become an eight pack and that it seemed that his torso had stretched slightly. Dismissing this as nothing to be worried about, it wasn’t long until Karl noticed something else had changed about Oskar. Looking down, he saw the young man’s cock. He had seen that cock for days, and yet it now looked to have almost doubled in length.
After they returned to their room, Karl waited until everyone was asleep before pulling his cock out and jerking off to the thought of Oskar’s huge penis. One day he would have to build up the courage to touch it himself...
The weeks continued to pass, with the Sergeant trying new, sadistic ways to break their spirits. The recruits also had their first casualty when Recruit Adria was shot on the firing range by an accidental discharge. The recruit who caused this was beaten into a pulp and left outside chained to a post until he succumbed to his wounds...
Still, the Sergeant couldn’t seem to harm Oskar, but the remaining recruits were now becoming extremely jealous of him. He managed to remain a model recruit—he made sure his bedspace was ready for inspection, prepared his uniform perfectly and never tired during exercise. Luckily, nobody seemed to notice the slight changes continuing to happen to his body. Nobody, except Karl.
The recruits had had enough and decided to bring Oskar down.
It was during a room inspection that they put their plan in motion. With the Sergeant’s blessing, the recruits locked Oskar in his locker and messed up his bedspace, only letting him out when the Corporal came in for the inspection. Seeing the mess, the Corporal beat Oskar and threw him into shackles to be left outside attached to the post overnight.
Left in the pitch dark, chained and cuffed to the post, Oskar felt something crawling over him. Moving to try to get the bug away, Oskar discovered that he could bend in ways he never knew possible. Experimenting throughout the night, he discovered that he could slip free from the chains and cuffs by making his body thinner, including his skull. Quickly reassuming his position before dawn, he decided to try his new gift out after lights out the following night.
The Corporal found him awake in the morning, without any cuts or bruises from the day before, and still in good spirits. To say he was disappointed that Oskar survived was an understatement. In anger, he beat Oskar again before marching him to breakfast in his dirty uniform.
By the eighth week, everyone had started to notice that changes to Oskar. He had grown over a foot in height and was now sporting a 10 pack. The fact that he was the only member of the troop without a single scar had also led to some suspicion that something wasn’t right.
Sergeant Zimmermann reported this to the officer in charge of the recruits. The officer, another cruel man, had decided to observe Oskar from afar using cameras in the barrack room. He ordered that Oskar be sent to the camp doctor for tests.
The doctor, a lazy man, entirely uninterested in the welfare of the men in the barracks, looked over Oskar.
“I can find nothing wrong with this recruit,” he shouted at the Sergeant. “Why has he been sent to me?”
“Herr Doctor,” the Sergeant replied, “Major Himmelstoss has ordered it. The recruit seems to be different to the other men. He bears no scars or bruising from the beating, and he has grown since the start of training.”
“That may be Sergeant,” the doctor snapped back, “but I see nothing in any of his test results to say that he isn’t anything but ordinary. Take him back, and don’t bother me with him again.”
The Sergeant, knowing his place, saluted the doctor and marched Oskar back to the barrack room.
The other recruits, having seen Oskar return entirely unharmed, decided on a different tactic. They had seen how close Oskar had gotten to Karl, and decided that was his weak spot...
It was the tenth week, with only two more weeks to go. Oskar had grown again, now showing a 12 pack. He still hadn’t had a single mark of any of the daily beatings he had endured.
The troop were in the showers, cleaning themselves after a night in the field where another two had been killed by friendly fire and the man responsible being bayonetted by his squad mates on the Sergeant’s order. The men were now as cruel as their leaders, all compassion had been beaten from them. Their spirits broken; they were easily moulded by the regime above them. All except Karl and Oskar...
“Freak!” the recruit who seemed to be the leader shouted at Oskar, long past using his name, “we know about you and your girlfriend here...”
The recruit pointed to Karl.
“Have you broken her in yet?” he taunted, “or do you need to watch how a real man does it?”
At a signal, the some of the troop grabbed Oskar while the rest took Karl and held him still while their leader started to rape him. A rage built up in Oskar at seeing his friend being molested and beaten in front of him.
Something in his mind snapped.
With a roar, Oskar threw the recruits holding him against the wall, then rushed forward at an inhuman speed to grab the leader by his throat. Slamming him against the wall, Oskar stared into his eyes. A new instinct took over. He opened his mouth slightly and his tongue started to snake out. As it lengthened to impossible sizes, he started to taste the sweat covered flesh of the leader.
“Mmmm...” Oskar said, menacingly, “you taste good.”
Without warning, Oskar opened his mouth wide and swallowed the leader’s head. His tongue continued to dance across the other man’s flesh as he started to swallow more and more with each gulp. The other recruits seeing this panicked, with some fleeing and others running to get the Sergeant. Karl was slumped onto the floor, bleeding and broken.
Oskar stepped back from the wall, the leader’s neck now securely in his mouth. Lifting the rest of the body with his strong arms, he forced his mouth wider to swallow his meal’s shoulders. Placing the leader’s feet against the wall, Oskar used it to push him further down his throat.
The Sergeant came bursting into the showers as Oskar reached the leader’s waist. Staring at Oskar, he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Fear set into him.
“God in heaven,” the Sergeant whispered. “What are you?...”
With a last swallow, the leader’s feet disappeared into Oskar’s mouth. With his mouth closed, Oskar looked no different than he had earlier in the day, and yet he had just swallowed another human being whole.
“Sergeant,” the tannoy announced, the officer’s voice coming through loudly, “that recruit is to be apprehended and kept for study.”
“Yes, sir!” the Sergeant called, knowing that there were microphones and cameras all over the barracks.
“Recruit Lange,” the Sergeant said, drawing his pistol, “you will surrender and come with me.”
Oskar put his hands above his head, and walked in front of the Sergeant as he was led from the room.
“It’s impossible!” the doctor shouted.
“It’s true,” the Sergeant replied. “I saw it with my own eyes.”
“No,” the doctor shouted again, “it is entirely impossible.”
“I can assure you, doctor,” the officer said, coming into the room, “what the Sergeant says is entirely true. This recruit somehow managed to swallow another recruit, and I want to know how. This power would make me unstoppable...”
Two days later, despite running every test available to him, as well as rigorous questioning from the Sergeant and the officer, they were no further forward as to how Oskar had managed to do this.
“Perhaps we need a different approach,” the officer said. “Bring in his friend.”
Karl was dragged in by the two Corporals and thrown at the feet of the officer.
“I will make this very simple, Recruit Lange,” the officer said, coldly. “You will tell me how you are able to do that, or I will shoot this worthless scum.”
The officer drew his pistol and aimed it at Karl’s head. Karl looked at Oskar with pleading eyes.
“I don’t know,” Oskar said, “it just happened.”
“I will count to 5,” the officer said. “One.”
“Please, don’t kill him,” Oskar begged. “I don’t know what I did. I don’t know. I don’t know...”
“Five,” the officer said. “Sergeant, shoot him.”
The officer stepped away and walked out of the room. The Sergeant drew his pistol and pointed it at Karl. As the officer closed the door behind him he heard the pistol fire. Without missing a step, he simply walked back to his office. He would need to think of a new plan...
The Sergeant pulled the trigged and fired... but instead of hitting Karl, the bullet fell to the ground with a metallic clunk. Oskar’s outstretched hand had blocked the bullet from hitting Karl. The Sergeant never got the chance to comprehend how Oskar had managed to make it over from the other side of the room to block the bullet, nor how he had managed to deflect it with nothing more than his hand. Instead, he only saw darkness as he felt himself pulled into Oskar’s widening maw...
All chaos broke out, as the doctor fainted at the sight and the two Corporals started emptying their pistols into Oskar’s lengthening body.
As the Sergeant slid down his throat, Oskar deliberately put his body between the two firers and Karl, hoping to protect him from harm. As Karl watched, Oskar seemed to stretch upwards with each gulp, until he had doubled in height from when he first walked through the gates of the barracks.
“C’mon Karl,” Oskar said, “we need to get out of here.”
“THIS BARRACKS IS NOW ON LOCKDOWN—NO RECRUIT PERSONNEL IN OR OUT OF ANY BUILDING—FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL RESULT IN INSTANT TERMINATION”
The tannoy announcement was accompanied by an alarm. Oskar could hear the trained troops from the barracks taking up position around the building. The two Corporals fled outside to join their comrades.
It was a stand-off...
“Recruit Lange,” the voice announced over the tannoy, “if you surrender, no harm will come to you or your comrade. If you do not, I will destroy the building you are in and everyone in it.”
Outside, the officer picked up a field telephone.
“General,” the officer said, “we have everything in position. You have the footage I sent you? Yes, I believe that we could synthesise this soldier’s blood and make super soldiers that would enable us to regain our country’s former glory. I believe that we could do this whether the soldier is alive or dead. Yes, general. Right away.”
The officer clicked the phone down and walked over to the tank that had been parked outside the building.
“Change of plan,” the officer said calmly, “level that building, and we’ll just pull the blood from his corpse.”
With a smile that tank commander ordered his gunner to target the building and open fire.
With a sound like a hundred thunderclaps, the building was blown to pieces. Underneath the rubble, Oskar had tried to protect Karl as best as he could, but the other recruit was dying.
“Get out of here, Oskar,” Karl said weakly. “It’s you they’re after. There’s something about you that they need. Escape, flee...”
“I can’t leave you here,” Oskar said, tears flowing from his eyes.
“All that I leave here is my body,” Karl said, with a calm strength, “I will be with you wherever you go.”
As Oskar cried, Karl closed his eyes for the final time.
Oskar, enraged and yet trapped by the building on top of him, could do nothing but weep for his friend...
“No diggers,” the officer commanded, “we need as much of the body found as possible.”
The soldiers started moving rubble by hand, searching each piece for signs of the special recruit.
Oskar, still mourning his friend, heard the sounds of the soldiers. He thought about breaking free and fighting them all, but the lingering words of Karl resonated inside his head—’Escape, flee...’
Using his newfound abilities, Oskar compressed himself until he was able to squeeze through the cracks in the rubble. Slowly but surely, he made his way until he found himself near the surface, as far away from the searching soldiers as he could be. As darkness fell, he slipped away and squeezed through a small gap in the fence. With a speed that no human could ever achieve, he ran towards the nearest village...
Whilst the Army now believed him dead, or at least they will until they don’t find his corpse, Oskar had a new problem to overcome. With no clothes, and standing over 11 feet tall, Oskar wouldn’t be able to fit in anywhere. He wondered about his ability to compress his body, and whilst he could reduce his height by folding his spine a few times, he still needed clothes to avoid any scrutiny.
Finding an old scarecrow in a field, he took the clothes and made his way into the village...
Oskar passed through the village in darkness. He couldn’t travel home as his grandparents would be arrested and shot if the Army found him there, and he couldn’t stay in Austria as he didn’t have any papers so would be arrested instantly by the police. He had to get across the border.
Knowing that he was in the north of the country, Oskar decided that he would simply run north until he found himself at the border. Squeezing himself into a small space to hide during the day, such as a dead tree or an old well, and moving at night to avoid detection, Oskar started his journey to freedom.
Passing through a village one night, he spotted some posters on the town noticeboard. It seemed that the Army had finally realised that he had survived and had put out a wanted poster offering a substantial reward for information or capture. Spotting some villagers looking at him, he decided not to hang around any longer just in case someone realised who he was.
In just four days, Oskar managed to make it to the border with Germany. The speed at which he was able to run amazed him—especially given the size of his new body. The next problem was how to get across the border without being spotted...
Austria had closed its borders 20 years ago due to the Nationalist takeover. The rest of the United European Federation had sanctioned the country for its political choices, which led to a further entrenching of the Nationalist’s power. Now the border was guarded at all times by the Army, and this would make it difficult to escape.
Oskar took a few days to work out the schedule of the patrols and realised that there was a two-minute window where he could reach the wall without detection. As he sat in silence, watching he continued to hear Karl’s voice in his head—’Escape, flee...’ He decided tonight was the night to take his chance...
Leaving his scare-crow outfit behind, Oskar observed the patrols as they came and went. Each patrol consisted of 8 men and two dogs. They were timed so that there would always be someone on top of the wall, or someone at the bottom of the wall, with the exception of a change every two hours. This change would take two minutes when there wouldn’t be anyone on the wall or at the bottom.
Oskar saw his chance and ran for the wall as quickly as he could. He reached it without detection, then noticed that the wall was smooth concrete. Deciding to try something, he formed a claw with his fingers and pushed it into the wall. With his inhuman strength, he found that he could simply push his fingers and toes into the wall and climb up. With his 11-foot frame it didn’t take too long to climb to the top where he simply darted across and leapt over the side into Germany. As soon as his feet touched the ground he bolted into a run, simply tearing the barbed wire fence as he passed through...
[Back in the Interview Room]
Oliver is scribbling notes as fast as he can, while Tre continues to translate Oskar’s incredible story.
“So, you managed to make it to freedom in Germany?” Oliver asked.
Oskar nodded on hearing Tre’s translation.
“What made you come to Avonkirk?” Oliver enquired.
[In German] “I was still a freak in Germany,” Oskar continued, “and had to keep hiding myself during the daytime in case someone noticed I was different...”
[Flashback]
Oskar had crossed the border into Germany and entered the nearest town. It was nighttime but the streetlights illuminated the town. Oskar stuck to shadows to keep from being seen. He kept going until he came out the other side of town and found a farm. Climbing into the hayloft, he settled down for the first sleep he had in days. He closed his eyes and fell asleep.
Oskar heard Karl’s voice again—’Escape, flee...’
He awoke to the sounds of gunfire. Looking out from the barn he saw the town in flames with troops scrambling over it. Am I that important that the ODR would go to war with the UEF over me? Oskar thought.
‘Escape, flee...’
The sounds of gunfire got closer. Oskar couldn’t do anything to help the townspeople. Staying wasn’t an option either. Oskar quickly fled, running as fast as he could despite the daylight. He continued running until night fell, hoping that he had fled the soldiers. Finding himself alone in a field, he stopped and collapsed to the ground.
A whole town killed, just because of me, Oskar thought as tears filled his eyes.
As he lay, sobbing, a horse came up beside him and nuzzled him. Oskar looked at the horse and his stomach rumbled. He looked again...
“I’m sorry, friend, but I need to eat,” Oskar said to the horse then opened his mouth wide.
Oskar snuck into the town and quickly headed into an alleyway to hide. As he sat with only his thoughts to keep him company, he reflected on his life. He had grown up in a loving household, with his mother and grandparents. Then the Nationalists came, and everything changed. His mother was arrested and taken away—he never saw her again. His grandparents tried their best to keep him safe, but the sanctions made things more and more difficult. As he continued with his thoughts, he realised he wasn’t alone in the alley anymore...
“C’mon babe,” a male voice said, “it’ll only take a few minutes.”
“Um, I’d rather not,” a female voice said.
“Oh, I don’t care what you think,” another male voice said, menacingly.
Oskar raised his head and looked at the scene in front of him. Three men were surrounding the woman, who had her back against the wall. The men started ripping the woman’s clothes off as she started to scream.
A rage overcame Oskar, and he leapt from his hiding place. Towering over the men he lifted the first up and into his mouth in less than a few seconds. The other two men turned towards Oskar and pulled out knives. The woman, taking her chance, fled the scene.
The closest man lunged with his knife stabbing Oskar in his side. Both Oskar’s and the man’s eyes bugged out at the sight—the blade had shattered on contact with Oskar’s skin. A Cheshire Cat smile broke out over Oskar’s face. He picked the man up and slid him down his throat...
“...And then there was one,” Oskar said, turning towards the last man.
The man fell to his knees.
“Please don’t eat me,” the man begged. “I’ll do anything...”
Oskar looked down at him, and an idea came into his mind.
“Your clothes,” Oskar demanded.
The man stripped quickly, knowing what his fate would be if he didn’t comply. A few minutes later, a clothed Oskar, his spine folded so that he stood just over 6 feet tall, left the alley and headed into town.
Oskar was finally able to walk around town without drawing suspicion.
As he stood in the shopping centre, he watched the news in the TV store. It was about the attack at the border. It turned out that the ODR blamed a rogue commander and the UEF accepted the offer of compensation for the destruction of the town in an effort to keep the peace. The news also mentioned rumours of the ODR’s ‘failed super soldier programme’ being cancelled after the execution of the officer in charge.
Oskar felt that he was free, and yet Karl’s voice still spoke to him—’Escape, flee...’
As he left the store, he felt he was being watched. Two people in trench coats started following him. Really? Oskar thought, could they be more obvious?
Oskar led them through the shopping centre until he was sure he lost them. As he checked around to make sure, he saw a poster in front of him on the wall.
The poster showed images of people who looked like Oskar, as well as people with extra limbs. Underneath the writing read ‘MultiTours—the resort for people of all shapes and sizes.’ As he looked at it, Karl’s voice repeated its familiar refrain—’Escape, flee...’
[Back in the Interview Room]
[In German] “Then I saw an advertisement for a place called MultiTours. It had people that looked like me, as well as people with all different bodies on it, looking happy. I knew that I needed to get there. But looking the way I did, I couldn’t simply walk into the airport, even if I had the money to buy the tickets. So, I posted myself here.”
“You posted yourself?” Oliver asked.
[In German] “Yes,” Oskar replied. “I knew that I could squeeze myself into a small parcel and would manage to pass through the customs easily because the UEF doesn’t do any checks until you leave their borders.”
“Right,” Oliver noted, “and that will be why the Customs Checkpoint at the Avondale port picked you up.”
[In German] “I guess,” Oskar shrugged. “And now I am here. What do you plan to do to me?”
“Well, I’m not sure,” Oliver said. “Technically, you’ve entered the country illegally, but you’re also fleeing from your country with the risk of death if you return. I’d say that you should claim asylum.”
[In German] “How would I do that?” Oskar asked.
“Leave that to me,” Oliver replied. “In the meantime, I suggest that you come with me up to the Institute so that we can properly care for you. You’ve been through a lot, and you’re going to need some serious support to help you get over this. Would you be happy with this?”
Oskar nodded.
Oskar entered the room and saw the custom-made bed. Instinct took over and he lay down upon the soft mattress.
Oliver, Tre and Vlad looked on.
“Don’t worry about the paperwork,” Vlad said, “I’ll take care of that.”
“I’ll speak to Dylan and see if the Foundation can help out with any legal costs,” Tre said.
“That’s great guys,” Oliver said, “that’ll allow me to concentrate on helping the poor guy with his experiences. Listening to what he’s gone through, he’s going to need a lot of support.”
Oskar ignored the voices as he lay down and closed his eyes. Inside his head, Karl’s voice no longer repeated the chant of ‘Escape, flee.’ Instead, he heard the voice remind him ‘I will be with you wherever you go’. He released a breath that he didn’t know he was holding.
He was finally safe.
