David went up to the room of his housemate and knocked on the brown-painted door. ‘Calvin? Are you all right? I brought you some tea.’
David could hear some sounds in Calvin’s room before he heard his hand at the door.
‘Yes… still a little ill.’
‘You want the tea?’
‘Just put it down.’
‘Will I see you tomorrow?’
For a second or two, there was a silence. ‘Ma...maybe.’
David didn’t know what was happening, but it sounded like Calvin was on the brink of crying.
‘All right, I will put it down in front of the door. Be careful when you step out.’
No reaction.
David went down to the kitchen and sat down at the kitchen table. He had the feeling it was this table where all this had started.
David and Calvin had been friends ever since their college days. Though they were good friends, Calvin had always been close about his parents. ‘They are… not far away from me.’
Some other things that always were strange around Calvin was his connection with plants. David never had been good with greens, but for some reason Calvin knew what to give plants. Once he rook a look at David’s rose and… David didn’t have another word for it, he revived it. It was even more beautiful and bigger than he was before.
Calvin was just two days older than David, but he never talked down to him. Some might say their personalities were very different. David liked to party and drink a lot of booze. But Calvin was more silent, at least around others. When David was alone with him, he felt like they had a real connection, best friends in life. Never a secret. At least, until two weeks ago.
It all started when Calvin got a letter in the morning mail. It was in a handwriting David didn’t recognize. He sat down to just casually read the paper. However, he noticed the look on Calvin’s face shifted from excited to disbelieving, and ended in sadness.
‘I euh….’ he tried to say before he rushed from the room.
David tried to talk with him, but Calvin asked to give him some time to think.
The next day, for the first time in the three years they lived together, Calvin had locked his door. He didn’t react to David calling his name through the door and phoned in sick from work.
David tried to talk with him every day. Sometimes he spent several minutes in front of Calvin’s door. Before and after work, David made him breakfast and dinner. Sometimes he found the food touched but most of the time, Calvin didn’t seem to eat.
As David sat at the kitchen table, he tried to picture Calvin in front of him.
Calvin was a 1 meter 94 guy with brown curling hair, mostly wearing jeans and green shirts. One of the things that never changed was a necklace around Calvin’s neck. It had a golden panflute pendant on it, even if David never recalled Calvin playing the instrument. Whenever he asked about it, Calvin never said anything and just looked away, so David knew he had to avoid that topic as it seemed to upset him.
While he pictured the fun times they had, David tried to think of what could have been written in the letter that been sent to him. Of course, David had called Calvin’s boss, but he could only tell him what little Calvin had said for himself. Maybe it was a family member that had passed away? But as far as David knew, Calvin never left his room to see anyone after the letter. David would want to be with his family if something like that happened. No, whoever they were, David knew for sure they were fine.
David buried his head in his hands. It hurt him that he didn’t know what his friend was going through. He wanted to help Calvin so freaking much. He promised himself that if Calvin didn’t show his face by the next morning, he would kick his door in and force an explanation.
The day went on and by nightfall, Calvin still hadn’t appeared. David went to bed but the worries about Calvin kept him awake well after he flicked the light off.
Hours went by, and David knew he had dozed off because he suddenly woke from a shout in the hallway.
‘Fucking...stairs...!’
It was Calvin, but why would he go out in the middle of the night? David’s clock read 2:38.
David kicked off the sheets and pulled on black jogging pants and a black shirt. He was going to follow Calvin and if it was needed he would beat the answers from him.
He ignored the blond, 1 meter 83 guy in his mirror as he grabbed a small flashlight, figuring he might need it, and went out. He took a quick look in Calvin’s room. The door was standing open, and to his surprise the room was completely empty: no clothes, no sheets, no posters. Was that it? Was Calvin just ditching him?
This only infuriated David more. He wanted to know why Calvin would do that, even if that would mean he had to drag it out.
When David got outside, Calvin had already reached the other end of the street. David decided he would follow at a safe distance.
From the way Calvin went, David guessed he was headed to the city park—which was odd, since the city park was closed after 10 in the evening. Still, it looked like the park was his destination.
At some point, David lost sight of his quarry for a second, as he had to wait for a car to pass. Calvin got away. David wasn’t the one to give up and peered across at the park gates. He noticed one gate specifically wasn’t closed. He knew this was the way Calvin had gone, he just knew it.
The gate didn’t make a sound as David pushed it open. He didn’t know what to expect in the urban preserve at this hour. Gay bashers? Prostitutes? What would be hiding behind the wall of trees and bushes? Who lurked in the shadows and the dark corners?
The park was pretty big and it would be impossible to find Calvin if he didn’t have any type of direction. Luckily the moon was up so he didn’t need the flashlight.
Soon enough, he found a split in the road. Left would go to the pond, right to the food area, and going straight on he would find the Biggest Tree.
He knew Calvin went to the tree. He didn’t know why he knew so sure. He just knew that he did.
While he headed down the path, he got worried. Why was Calvin here? Was he doing something illegal, or was he meeting something in secret? David stopped in his tracks for a moment. What if he ran into something he wasn’t supposed to? If he ran into a date, he might seem like a jealous guy. But if Calvin had problems or he might get anywhere near illegal stuff, David wanted to help him.
His mind got overwhelmed with the question of what was happening to Calvin and why he didn’t trust David enough to talk to him. His head started to hurt a lot from the questions.
He wanted to walk further, but the back of his mind got pulled by something… different. Music.
It was a beautiful kind of music. The kind that would calm your heart and clear your mind. David’s shoulders lost their tension and he took a moment to let all the thoughts in his mind settle. For a moment he had total peace.
He looked around. Maybe he could find the person that made the music and he could with… euh… he lost that for a moment.
The music seemed to come from near the tree, so David decided to follow it.
When he got closer, he saw a big, white rock that had been in that place for ages. On top of the rock sat… something that David only knew from his Greek History class.
The upper part of the… creature, looked that of a normal man. A well-built body with soft nipples, almost completely hairless down to his hips. From that point it started to get… interesting was one way to put it. The legs of the man were almost completely covered in hair. It was more like a pelt than hair. He didn’t have feet, but hooves—shiny black hooves. Amidst his jet-black hair, two short horns stood out. His hands, which looked normal as far as David could tell, held a panflute he was playing. The melody was amazing and it surely made David feel safe and sound. The moon gave him a beautiful view as his green eyes looked to David. He knew what he was playing, it was almost like the Pied Piper of Hamelin, luring its victims to him.
David didn’t know what was happening anymore; the music was just too hypnotizing.
‘Stop that immediately!’
|
The shout broke David out of his hypnotized state. He grabbed the side of his head to get clear again, while watching the one that shouted. His first thought was disappointment. It was just another satyr… But when he looked a second time, he noticed the creature’s necklace. It was Calvin.
Calvin walked to the other one and poked his chest. ‘Leave him alone, Glir.’
The satyr gave Calvin a grin. ‘Aww, come on. I just wanted to have some fun. It’s my last change. But fine. I’m willing to share. Always knew you were a cock-lovin—umph.’
Calvin suddenly punched Glir in his stomach. ‘I said, leave him alone. I will bring this human back and make sure he won’t rat us. Now. Leave!’
Glir looked to Calvin. ‘You will regret this. I will get you Pyzaam.’
David, who kept his mouth shut to not make things worse, looked to his friend when Glir was gone. Calvin looked sad when he gave a loot back.
‘Calvin, what is going on? You’re a… a ...’
‘A satyr. Yes.’ Calvin answered in a whisper. ‘I never wanted you to find it out, Not… like this anyway.’
‘So you did want to ditch me?’
‘Yes and no. I couldn’t bare to face you personally, so I left a note on the kitchen table. I’m so sorry, I never thought you would follow me.’
‘Well, I’m here now. And I won’t go away before you tell me why you broke our friendship like this.’
Calvin could see he didn’t joke when his face became even angrier.
‘I’m sorry, but I can’t. It isn’t that easy to explain. Please go home and forget about me.’
‘You’re a fucking dipshit, you know that?’ David almost shouted, he grabbed Calvin by his chest hair. ‘When did I ever give you the feeling that we can’t talk about anything that is bothering you? All these years and when things get hard you just drop me like a brick.’
Calvin bit his knuckle. David could see he was hurting him. But he didn’t care at that moment.’
‘Please don’t push me, David. You are too dear to me.’
Calvin wanted to put his hand on David’s shoulder, but the human slapped it away.
‘Don’t touch me you, traitor!’
‘Pyzaam!’ someone shouted from the direction of the tree, a female this time.
Calvin looked up. He knew David wouldn’t go away, and the voice was too close for David to walk away unseen. Calvin grabbed David’s shoulder and pushed him into a bush. ‘Please stay here and don’t come out till I tell you.’
Just as three satyrs showed up, Calvin looked normal. David recognized one of them as the one before, Glir.
‘Pyzaam, we are waiting for you. Hurry, otherwise we will miss the start of Harvest week.’
‘Just a moment Fesnal. It isn’t easy to leave all this behind just like that. Part of my life is here you know.’
‘Jeesh Pyzaam, it’s just a stupid human world. Don’t get attached to it or something. I never understood why you were allowed to go here anyway.’
‘I don’t hate human like you do Glir. They were very friendly to me and I will miss them.’
Still inside the bush, David could see a tear on Calvin’s cheek.
‘Well, if you are done we like to go. Just don’t take to long, otherwise you will miss it.’ Fesnal gave Calvin a last look before they walked away.
David rose from the bush. ‘Well, are you going to tell me or what?’
Calvin looked back, his face seemed more confident than before.
‘No, I’m going to show you. I take you with me to my hometown.’
‘Excuse me?’
‘Don’t worry. I won’t let you down and it will be worth it. But not like this.’
‘Why not?’
‘Because my hometown isn’t fond of humans. Don’t worry, I will just patch you up a little.’
Calvin took the pendant from his necklace, which enlarged into a panflute. Calvin blew a couple of notes, which made David feel like something tickled his body. Within some seconds, his feet had turned to hooves, two horns stood from his hair and his body from his waist down got covered in a blond pelt. David took some moments to get used to his, he even discovered a small tail that appeared from a small hole in his pants.
‘So, now we can go.’
‘What have you done?’
‘Don’t worry, it’s just a cosmetic spell. It will wear off when you come back to the human world.’
‘You are confusing me.’
‘That’s fine. Just let me do the talking when we get to them.’
David followed Calvin to the tree. ‘Why are those guys calling you Pyzaam?’
‘Because that is my satyr name. There is a difference between satyr and human names. But when I came to the human world to study, I took another name to blend in better.’
‘I have too many questions.’
‘Fine, but not now, not here.’
‘Well, there he is,” Fesnal said when the two reached the tree. ‘Hey, who’s that?’
‘I dunno, he showed up when I came here.’
Fesnal lifted his eyebrow. ‘Jeesh, you’re just an emotional wreck sometimes. Where’d you come from boy?’
‘Belgium. Satyr are allowed to get out more there.’
Fesnal looked at Calvin with an irritated face.
‘What’s you name?’ When Calvin wanted to answer again Fesnal gave him a look. ‘I want to hear it from his mouth. Or is he stupid?’
This left Glir and the third satyr with a reason to laugh.
David looked to Fesnal, he was not much taller than him, but quite intimidating. He knew this was a test, and by what Calvin told him, his name was to human. But how could he come up with a name that wasn’t too human?
David thought quick, knowing he would be cornered if it took to long.
‘Iavan… miss.’
Fesnal took a better look at him, then gave him a quick smile.
‘Fine, but hurry. We are already late.’
Fesnal turned himself and walked to the tree. Iavan let out a breath, he douched a huge bullet there. Still, he knew that Glir wasn’t convinced yet, but he probably didn’t have any arguments to turn suspicion.
Iavan could feel Pyzaam’s hand on his back, his voice whispering in his ear. ‘Relax, just act like you do with other people.’
‘Easy for you to say.’
When the five gathered around the three, Fesnal took his own panflute and start to play the music.
Unlike the music Glir played before, this one wasn’t hypnotising, but more, calling. It was like it tried to reach something.
Wind blew trough the leaves of the tree and Iavan had the feeling something got closer. A feeling like when a creepy man in a horror movie approached, but far more friendly.
Iavan looked at the tree again, especially the base part. A glow seemed to shine between the vines that had been grown around the base trunk. The wind got strong and from what he saw it was like the moonlight melted together with whatever light came from… was it inside the tree.
Suddenly, as Fesnal played the last note, the vines suddenly grew apart and showed what looked like a wooden tunnel. On the side walls were lit torches.
‘Let’s go,” Pyzaam whispered, as he put his hand on Iavan’s back. ‘Just follow the path.’
Pyzaam made sure he was the last to enter the tunnel, as the vines would close behind them.
The tunnel was the weirdest thing Iavan had ever seen. The walls were made of thick vines. Pieces of moss could be seen every now and then as some kind of decoration. With his new ears he was able to hear some mice that ran around the place just outside their sight in the small holes they had chewed.
The light from the torches guided them to.. where ever they would go. The wooden tunnel was just a head taller than Iavan was now. Glir, the tallest of all of them, almost reached the ceiling. Lucky the tunnel was wide enough for two to walk together, which gave Iavan and Pyzaam time to whisper talk.
It was strange, the tunnel seemed to go in a straight path the whole time, but it felt like they were traveling underground.
‘Dude, do you want to tell me what is going on now?’
Pyzaam didn’t answer immediately, and Iavan could see the sadness on his face.
‘All right, but just the short version. Every year the satyrs from around the proper age get back home to what we call Harvest Day. It’s like… a ritual for a young satyr to become an adult.’
‘Was that what all the huss was about?’
‘Well, it wasn’t easy to tell that I was a satyr at the first place. And than telling this.’
‘Dude, I will always be their for you. What kind of friend would I be if I didn’t take you as you are?’
Pyzaam bit his nail again. ‘Dammit Iavan, you don’t make this any easier for me. Why are you such a good friend?’
‘You make this hard on yourself by overthinking. Just come clear man.’
Because of their talk, Iavan didn’t notice Glir stopped and he bumped into him.
‘Hey, what up?’ Pyzaam asked. ‘We can’t be there yet.’
‘We aren’t,” Glir said, the tone of his voice made it clear. ‘I just wanted to say. I don’t trust either of you.’
‘Glir, shut up. Just keep walking.’
Glir suddenly grabbed Pyzaam’s shoulder. ‘Listen you, being all fancy with your human world and all. We had to come and get you, then you blue-balled me and suddenly this random satyr comes up. I wonder if the Council has even heard of him.’
Pyzaam gave him a dirty smile. ‘Awww, are you angry I ruined your date? You know we can’t use the music to spell humans like that. You were walking a tightrope—oomph.’
Just like Pyzaam did before, Glir gave him a punch in the gut, which made Pyzaam fall to his knees. ‘That’s for earlier,” Glir said with a disgusted look on his face. ‘Fucking fag.’
Iavan helped his friend to get back on his feet. ‘Jeesh. What is his problem?’ Pyzaam grunted, spitting out some blood.
‘Yeah, hard to believe we used to be childhood best friends.’
‘Excuse me?’
Suddenly, Fesnal looked around the corner Glir had disappeared around. ‘Hey, what are you guys waiting for?’
