David went up to the room of his housemate and knocked on the brown-painted door. ‘Calvin? Are you all right? I brought you some tea.’
David could hear some sounds in Calvin’s room before he heard his hand at the door.
‘Yes… still a little ill.’
‘You want the tea?’
‘Just put it down.’
‘Will I see you tomorrow?’
For a second or two, there was a silence. ‘Ma...maybe.’
David didn’t know what was happening, but it sounded like Calvin was on the brink of crying.
‘All right, I will put it down in front of the door. Be careful when you step out.’
No reaction.
David went down to the kitchen and sat down at the kitchen table. He had the feeling it was this table where all this had started.
David and Calvin had been friends ever since their college days. Though they were good friends, Calvin had always been close about his parents. ‘They are… not far away from me.’
Some other things that always were strange around Calvin was his connection with plants. David never had been good with greens, but for some reason Calvin knew what to give plants. Once he rook a look at David’s rose and… David didn’t have another word for it, he revived it. It was even more beautiful and bigger than he was before.
Calvin was just two days older than David, but he never talked down to him. Some might say their personalities were very different. David liked to party and drink a lot of booze. But Calvin was more silent, at least around others. When David was alone with him, he felt like they had a real connection, best friends in life. Never a secret. At least, until two weeks ago.
It all started when Calvin got a letter in the morning mail. It was in a handwriting David didn’t recognize. He sat down to just casually read the paper. However, he noticed the look on Calvin’s face shifted from excited to disbelieving, and ended in sadness.
‘I euh….’ he tried to say before he rushed from the room.
David tried to talk with him, but Calvin asked to give him some time to think.
The next day, for the first time in the three years they lived together, Calvin had locked his door. He didn’t react to David calling his name through the door and phoned in sick from work.
David tried to talk with him every day. Sometimes he spent several minutes in front of Calvin’s door. Before and after work, David made him breakfast and dinner. Sometimes he found the food touched but most of the time, Calvin didn’t seem to eat.
As David sat at the kitchen table, he tried to picture Calvin in front of him.
Calvin was a 1 meter 94 guy with brown curling hair, mostly wearing jeans and green shirts. One of the things that never changed was a necklace around Calvin’s neck. It had a golden panflute pendant on it, even if David never recalled Calvin playing the instrument. Whenever he asked about it, Calvin never said anything and just looked away, so David knew he had to avoid that topic as it seemed to upset him.
While he pictured the fun times they had, David tried to think of what could have been written in the letter that been sent to him. Of course, David had called Calvin’s boss, but he could only tell him what little Calvin had said for himself. Maybe it was a family member that had passed away? But as far as David knew, Calvin never left his room to see anyone after the letter. David would want to be with his family if something like that happened. No, whoever they were, David knew for sure they were fine.
David buried his head in his hands. It hurt him that he didn’t know what his friend was going through. He wanted to help Calvin so freaking much. He promised himself that if Calvin didn’t show his face by the next morning, he would kick his door in and force an explanation.
The day went on and by nightfall, Calvin still hadn’t appeared. David went to bed but the worries about Calvin kept him awake well after he flicked the light off.
Hours went by, and David knew he had dozed off because he suddenly woke from a shout in the hallway.
‘Fucking...stairs...!’
It was Calvin, but why would he go out in the middle of the night? David’s clock read 2:38.
David kicked off the sheets and pulled on black jogging pants and a black shirt. He was going to follow Calvin and if it was needed he would beat the answers from him.
He ignored the blond, 1 meter 83 guy in his mirror as he grabbed a small flashlight, figuring he might need it, and went out. He took a quick look in Calvin’s room. The door was standing open, and to his surprise the room was completely empty: no clothes, no sheets, no posters. Was that it? Was Calvin just ditching him?
This only infuriated David more. He wanted to know why Calvin would do that, even if that would mean he had to drag it out.
When David got outside, Calvin had already reached the other end of the street. David decided he would follow at a safe distance.
From the way Calvin went, David guessed he was headed to the city park—which was odd, since the city park was closed after 10 in the evening. Still, it looked like the park was his destination.
At some point, David lost sight of his quarry for a second, as he had to wait for a car to pass. Calvin got away. David wasn’t the one to give up and peered across at the park gates. He noticed one gate specifically wasn’t closed. He knew this was the way Calvin had gone, he just knew it.
The gate didn’t make a sound as David pushed it open. He didn’t know what to expect in the urban preserve at this hour. Gay bashers? Prostitutes? What would be hiding behind the wall of trees and bushes? Who lurked in the shadows and the dark corners?
The park was pretty big and it would be impossible to find Calvin if he didn’t have any type of direction. Luckily the moon was up so he didn’t need the flashlight.
Soon enough, he found a split in the road. Left would go to the pond, right to the food area, and going straight on he would find the Biggest Tree.
He knew Calvin went to the tree. He didn’t know why he knew so sure. He just knew that he did.
While he headed down the path, he got worried. Why was Calvin here? Was he doing something illegal, or was he meeting something in secret? David stopped in his tracks for a moment. What if he ran into something he wasn’t supposed to? If he ran into a date, he might seem like a jealous guy. But if Calvin had problems or he might get anywhere near illegal stuff, David wanted to help him.
His mind got overwhelmed with the question of what was happening to Calvin and why he didn’t trust David enough to talk to him. His head started to hurt a lot from the questions.
He wanted to walk further, but the back of his mind got pulled by something… different. Music.
It was a beautiful kind of music. The kind that would calm your heart and clear your mind. David’s shoulders lost their tension and he took a moment to let all the thoughts in his mind settle. For a moment he had total peace.
He looked around. Maybe he could find the person that made the music and he could with… euh… he lost that for a moment.
The music seemed to come from near the tree, so David decided to follow it.
When he got closer, he saw a big, white rock that had been in that place for ages. On top of the rock sat… something that David only knew from his Greek History class.
The upper part of the… creature, looked that of a normal man. A well-built body with soft nipples, almost completely hairless down to his hips. From that point it started to get… interesting was one way to put it. The legs of the man were almost completely covered in hair. It was more like a pelt than hair. He didn’t have feet, but hooves—shiny black hooves. Amidst his jet-black hair, two short horns stood out. His hands, which looked normal as far as David could tell, held a panflute he was playing. The melody was amazing and it surely made David feel safe and sound. The moon gave him a beautiful view as his green eyes looked to David. He knew what he was playing, it was almost like the Pied Piper of Hamelin, luring its victims to him.
David didn’t know what was happening anymore; the music was just too hypnotizing.
‘Stop that immediately!’
