This is not a direct sequel, but it takes place in the same universe as “Just Right”. For the best experience you may want to read “Just Right” first.

Part 1

Neil arrived at his locker and greeted his friend Ford who was currently grabbing the stuff from the locker next to Neil’s. “Hey.”

“Hey.”

“Got your letter yet?” Neil asked. Both of them had turned 20 in the last semester and it was now time for everyone to receive their mail, letting them know whether they’d become an owner or an object.

“Nope, you?”

“Yeah, came yesterday. I’m an owner.”

Ford closed his locker and looked at Neil. “Uh, congratulations?” he asked.

“Yeah, I guess.” Neil shrugged. “I don’t feel very strongly about it either way. Lots of objects in my family.”

“Oh, yeah.”

“What about you? Hoping for owner, I guess?”

“Yeah.” Ford frowned into himself. “I’m not studying just to be stuffed in some drawer for the rest of my life.”

“I mean, that largely depends on what object you choose to become, doesn’t it?”

Ford rolled his eyes and laughed. “You know what I mean.”

“Yeah, yeah, I guess you’re right,” Neil conceded. “Oh, by the way, are you free for Cantrip again this Saturday?”

“Sure, but let’s talk later, I gotta run.” Ford turned to leave. “Cya.”

“Cya.”

Unlike Ford, Neil wasn’t in a hurry. He had no class for the next two hours, so he was gathering his stuff to go to the library.

Once he was done he closed his locker and almost jumped when the muscular frame of Josh appeared behind the locker door.

“Cantrip, huh?” Josh was leaning against the other lockers, with a smirk on his face. “Isn’t that the game with the elves and dwarves and fairies and stuff?”

“Yes, it is.” Neil started to leave. He wasn’t in the mood for Josh’s antics. As far as bullies went, Josh had no teeth, but that didn’t make him any less annoying.

But Josh followed him. “Do you think I could join you guys?” His smirk was audible in his voice.

Neil wanted to tell him that he didn’t have the necessary number of brain cells, but he tried a more diplomatic approach. “I don’t think it’s a game for you. Requires a lot of preparation.”

“What. Do you, like, dress up and stuff?”

“No.”

“Do you sometimes dress up sexy in skimpy outfits?”

“What is your damage, Josh?” Neil snapped. “I just told you we don’t dress up.”

Josh raised his hands in defense. “I just wanted to know about the game, okay?”

“Leave me alone, Josh.” Neil quickened his pace.

“Fine.” Josh pocketed his hands and turned the other way.

Josh was eyeing the man next to him in the elevator without trying to draw attention. The man’s briefcase was an object, as in a human-turned-object. It had a human face on the side facing away from the man. Josh was trying to look for signs of the man wearing any more objects, humans-turned-objects. People deciding to become businessman accessories wasn’t rare. Many objects wanted to be part of a successful businessman’s prestige. Being a rich man’s item was the next best thing to being a rich man in their eyes.

And then there were people who chose to become underwear. Josh wondered how many people were being worn each day in public without anyone knowing.

Josh was interrupted from his thoughts as the elevator came to a stop. He got out and made his way to his father’s office. The people working here already knew him so no one would stop him or ask him where he was going. Josh came here regularly, mainly because these days his father was spending more time at the company than at home. The life of a CEO’s son…

Josh finally arrived in front of his dad’s office. He peeked through the window and gave a gentle knock to get the attention of the man inside. The man looked up and waved him in.

Josh opened the door and approached the desk where the man was sitting. “Hey dad.”

Instead of the man, his necktie answered, looking up at Josh. “Hey Big Guy. Already off for today? No class?”

“Nope.”

His dad raised an eyebrow. “And you’re not studying?”

“I’ll study later,” Josh lied. “You told me you wanted me to tell you when...” He held up the letter.

“Ohh.” His dad’s eyes went wide. “What does it say?”

“Object.”

Josh’s dad attempted a reassuring smile, possibly remembering when he received his own letter. “How do you feel about it?”

Josh shrugged. “Okay, I guess.”

“Do you already know what you want to be?”

“Yeah.”

After a short pause, his father prodded. “And?”

Josh hesitated. He looked at his father, then to the man wearing him and back to his father. Josh knew the man well. He was his dad’s owner and in some way a part of the family, though both he and his dad agreed not to get him involved with the upbringing of Josh. His dad’s owner had always been more of a close family friend than a guardian and as a result there were many things that Josh felt uncomfortable discussing in his presence.

Luckily his father knew his son well enough. “Alexander, can you take me off for a minute?”

Alexander turned away from the monitor he was staring at the whole time and got up. “Sure. Do you need some privacy?”

“No, no, I think if you put me on the rack, that’s enough.”

Alexander walked over to a small seating area with two chairs and a table, as well as a small rack between the chairs. He took off Josh’s dad and draped him on the rack so he would hang there with the face towards the table. Josh walked over and took a seat.

“So?” his dad continued.

Josh eyed his father’s assistant and pulled out his phone. After some seconds he opened the entry in the object catalog and put it in front of his dad.

It took his dad a second to realize what he was looking at. “No. No, absolutely not! I did not build all of this, just so my son becomes a—” He looked over to Alexander and back to the phone. “—this.”

Josh sighed. “Dad.”

“You will choose a respectable object—”

“Like what. A necktie?” Josh quipped.

But his father didn’t take the bait. “Josh, there is no discussion about it. You don’t need to be a necktie. You can choose anything you want, except for stuff like this, do you understand me?”

Josh rolled his eyes as he pocketed his phone and got up. “Well, I need to go studying.”

“Josh, don’t walk away from me,” his dad commanded. It was one of the important rules the two needed to have since his father was immobile.

Josh froze and turned around. “I’ll think about it, okay?”

His father didn’t have any temples, but Josh saw him chewing them anyway at his noncommittal answer. “We will talk about this some other time.”

Josh turned and left, slamming the door behind him with more force than he intended to.

“Good morning,” Neil greeted Ford who just arrived at his locker.

“Morning.” Ford seemed subdued.

“Everything all right?”

“Got my letter yesterday.”

“Object?” Neil asked, though he could read the answer from Ford’s face.

Ford nodded, trying hard not to show his sadness. “Going to the office to cancel my studies.”

“What, why?”

“I wanted to be a marine biologist, doing field research.” Ford frowned. “Can’t do that as an object.”

“Pretty sure you can,” Neil countered. “There’s plenty of objects who are scientists.”

“Name one.”

“Uh… Karl Wildman?”

“Fine, name ten.”

“Come on, that’s not fair.”

Ford ignored Neil’s objection. “Also, he’s a theoretical physicist. That’s not the same.”

“Do you already know what you’re going to be?”

“I don’t care.”

“You should! Otherwise they will assign something to you.”

Ford shrugged. “What does it matter?”

Neil was near speechless. “Remember the guy who didn’t pick his transformation? What was his name, Eugene? Three semesters up.”

“The guy who was turned into a toilet?”

“Into a public toilet, yeah,” Neil added. “You don’t want to end up like that, do you?”

Ford sighed. “Guess not.”

“Just…” Neil was trying to find the right words. “Don’t throw it all away. Even as an object you can still do all the things you want to do.”

Ford stared into his locker. “That’s an easy thing to say as an owner.”

That stung, but Neil understood that Ford’s pain was greater. “Ford, if I could help you, I would.”

Ford shrugged, but didn’t turn to look at Neil. “I mean, owners always have a choice to swap with an object.”

Neil didn’t say anything. It was true but…

“But no one ever does that,” Ford continued. “At the end of the day, no matter how much people try to erode the barriers between owners and objects, it will always be so much easier as an owner.”

Neil felt caught between warring emotions. He just told his friend he would help, but at the same time was unwilling to take the bullet, so to speak, after he just claimed it wasn’t a big deal. On the other hand he felt it was unfair that his friend implicitly asked him to do something irreversible to his life just to prove a point.

Before he could say anything, Ford turned to leave. “See you on Saturday.”

Josh eyed the last pizza slice on the table in front of him. “Want the last piece?”

“Nah, bro, I’m full,” Rick said. “You can have it.”

Josh leaned over to grab the last slice. It was yet another evening where his dad wouldn’t be home. Being an object there wasn’t really much to do at home for him, or anything really, while there was always something going on when you run a company. As a result, his dad wasn’t home very often, especially now that Josh was old enough to take care of himself.

He frequently invited his friends over, especially Rick, who was living in a dorm during his studies. Rick’s dorm buddy was a bit weird though, so Rick was glad to be out whenever he could, and Josh was happy to have company.

“So my letter arrived yesterday,” Rick said without taking his eyes off the TV.

“Owner?” Josh asked between bites.

Rick looked at Josh and grinned. “Nah, bro, I’m an object.”

Josh swallowed. “You’re happy about it?”

“Bro, are you kidding? I don’t have to work out anymore to become an athlete, I could be…” His eyes lit up. “I could be a race car.”

“Bro, that’s sick.”

“Right?! Or I could be a… Uh… A football? Is that cool?”

“Kinda cool, I guess.” Josh was unsure. “About 70% cool?”

“But not as cool as 100% race car cool!”

“Hell yeah, bro!”

“I’m going to be a race car, bro!”

“Bro!” Josh raised his fist for a fistbump, which Rick was happy to complete.

Both men sunk back into the couch, returning their attention to the game.

“Bro,” Rick began. “Do you already know what you wanna be?”

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

“Thanks for the ride,” Neil said as he stepped out of the car.

The taxi wound down the window. “You got it from here?”

Neil walked to the front door of the car so he could see the face on the headrest. “Yeah thanks, it’s not far from here.”

“All right,” the taxi said and raised the window again, waiting for the next passenger.

Neil briefly thought it might be weird if the taxi saw him entering a public toilet after a ten minute ride through the district, but he figured there could always be a reason one might visit a public place for personal reasons. Humans-turned-objects were everywhere after all.

And truth be told, that was exactly his reason. Just that he didn’t really know the guy he was visiting.

After his talk with Ford yesterday, Neil realized that as an owner he had a lot of power and privilege that he took for granted and that objects didn’t have. He figured he would repay the world by trying to make it a better place.

And what better way to start than helping out objects fate managed to push into a bad spot?

Neil entered the small public toilet that was really just a single stall inside.

Instead of getting ready to do his business, he stopped. “Umm, Eugene?”

There was no answer for a few seconds. Then a voice came from below the toilet. “Yes?” It didn’t sound particularly inviting, more like a clerk working in a public service, who wasn’t getting paid to be nice.

Neil bent down a little bit to see a face on the underside of the toilet. It was common for object toilets to have their face ‘out of the way’ so to speak. Made it less awkward to do your business.

“Don’t worry,” Neil began. “I’m not going to use you.”

“Great…” Eugene replied.

The tone gave Neil pause, but he figured if he had to live like this he’d be pretty grumpy too. “I learned what happened to you and I asked around a bit if there’s something that—”

He got cut off by Eugene. “Did you just come here to talk or what?”

“Look, I know how you must feel. I don’t think it’s fair to turn you into a toilet just because you didn’t register for a transformation in time. But there’s a way I can get you out of here. There is nothing that prevents you from being owned and as far as I can see a relocation into private ownership seems fairly simple. I’m sure we can find an owner somewhere who would promise not to use you. In the worst case, I—”

“Oh my fucking god stop talking!” Eugine cut in. “You don’t know anything! You don’t know shit! I didn’t turn in my transformation too late. I was assigned owner and asked a friend to swap with me, so I could become a toilet. And then I had to tell everyone that stupid lie because of assholes like you who think that nobody could possibly want to be a toilet for the rest of their lives. And then you have the audacity to snoop around my whereabouts like a creep and try to take this away from me. Fuck you!”

“I—” Neil stammered. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to—”

“Either take a fucking dump or get the fuck out of here, now!”

Josh was sitting on the couch, watching TV, when he heard the front door open. He knew it could only really be one person, or rather one pair of people. Normally he would be slightly more excited for someone to break the monotony, but he knew this meant there was going to be a father-son talk.

After some seconds Alexander appeared in the doorframe leading from the hall to the living room. He was wearing Josh’s father, as always.

“Hey, Big Guy, what are you watching?” His dad asked.

Josh shrugged. “A gameshow.” He reached for the remote and turned off the TV.

“Alexander, can you put me on the couch?”

“Sure.” His assistant walked over next to Josh, while untying the necktie person and putting him on the backrest of the couch, so the face of Josh’s dad was facing the same direction as Josh. “I will be in the study if you need me.” With that Alexander disappeared.

There were a few seconds of silence, with Josh staring at the turned off TV, before his dad began. “Have you thought about it?”

“What do you want to hear?”

“Josh, look.” His dad gathered his thoughts. “You can be anything you want. You can even be a pair of slacks if you want. It will be a bit awkward during meetings, but—”

Josh turned to his father. “Dad, I’m not gonna be in any meetings.”

“Josh.”

“I don’t want to do the things you do.” Josh looked away again. “You know that.”

His father let out a sigh. “I remember when I got my letter. I was devastated. I thought my life was over, that I would never amount to anything.” There was a short break. “It was a stroke of luck that I found Alexander as my owner. He never had ambitions of being a CEO himself but he did know his way around business. We were the perfect match.” Another pause. “I told myself that I would build something that allows you to live the life you want, regardless of what the letter would say one day.”

Josh was fidgeting. “I am choosing the life I want.”

Another long silence.

“I always wanted you to be happy,” his father began. “If it makes you happy, then I guess I can’t say anything against it.”

Josh looked over to his dad.

“All right, fine,” his father ceded. “But I have one condition.”

“What?”

“I want to meet him first.”

“Uh,” Josh didn’t expect this, but it was a manageable request. “Okay, sure.”

“All right.” His father didn’t know how to continue. “You, uh, can return me to Alexander now if you want.”

“Why would I want that?”

“I—” Josh’s father was visibly surprised. “I thought you’d maybe want to be alone.”

“You’re never home. And when you are you do business stuff with Alexander. I have more than enough alone time.”

“I see.” The surprise on his father’s face slowly faded. “What would you like to do?”

“How much time do you have?”

His father looked at the clock. “I have a meeting in two hours.”

“That should be enough time to watch yesterday’s game.”

“I don’t know the rules.”

“Don’t worry.” Josh reached for the remote. “I can teach you.”

Neil left the library. It was Friday and he had borrowed some books he would be studying over the weekend.

“Hey, Neil.” Ford approached him.

“Hey.”

The two hadn’t really talked a lot since that one conversation.

“Umm,” Ford began. “I kinda want to apologize for what I said. It wasn’t fair to you.”

“No worries.” Neil simply smiled. “Went through that with my two brothers and a cousin.” He shrugged. “It’s fine.”

“No hard feelings?”

“No. Besides, you were not wrong. So I guess you helped me ground myself a little,” he laughed.

Ford didn’t reply but there was a weak smile on his face.

“So,” Neil continued. “What are your plans now?”

Ford shrugged. “I decided to keep studying just in case and keep my eyes open for opportunities.”

“Sounds good.”

There was a short break and Ford decided to change topics. “Wanna grab something to eat?”

“Yeah, sure.”

“All right, I just need to return these books, I’ll be back in a second.”

“Okay.”

Once Ford had disappeared inside, a muscular shape appeared next to him.

“Hey Neil,” Josh said, the same insufferable grin on his face as always.

“Oh, great…”

“You know, if you ever want to work on that scrawny body of yours, you could come with me to the gym and I can show you how to train.”

Neil sighed. “Wow, that sounds amazing...”

“Yeah.” Josh bent forward and flexed one arm. “And if you work hard enough you can get muscles like this.”

With one of Josh’s muscled arms leaning against the wall and the other flexed, Neil felt trapped. “Leave me alone.”

“You can touch them if you want.”

“What I want is for you to leave me alone, Josh.”

Josh saw something next to Neil and raised his hands. “All right, all right, I’m leaving.”

Neil breathed out and noticed Ford next to him.

“What a prick.” Neil looked after Josh in the distance. “What’s his deal?”

Ford looked at Neil as if expecting something from him. “Neil, you just completely whiffed on your perception throw, did you?”

“What? What do you mean?”

Ford looked at Neil, then at Josh and finally back at Neil. “Josh just flirted with you.”

“... What?”

“He wanted you to feel his muscles…”

“To brag,” Neil argued.

“He invited you to train with him at the gym.”

“To make fun of me.”

Ford just gave him a look.

“You really think he was flirting with me?” Neil asked, just to make sure.

Ford nodded.

“That’s… horrible,” Neil brought out.

“The attempt itself or the fact that he was doing it?”

“Yes…”

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

“I can’t figure out guys,” Josh managed between breaths.

He and Rick were currently training on the sports field on campus. Sure they were going to be objects soon, but habits die hard and the school encouraged soon-to-be-objects to continue with their usual routine regardless. They had just finished another lap and were doing a short break to stretch their muscles.

There was a hint of surprise on Rick’s face. “Bro, aren’t you a guy?”

“I mean like, other guys. For dating.”

“Ohhh. What’s the matter, bro?”

“There’s this guy,” Josh began. “And I think he’s really cute. Not muscular at all, could probably use some training, but he has a really nice butt, like—” He made a grabbing motion with his hands.

“Ahhh, I see. You want him to be your owner?”

“I mean, now that I’m going to be an object, yeah, but I had him in my sights before that.” Josh shrugged. “He’s just cute.”

“Bro, you should ask him out.”

“I did! But he always blocks me off.”

“Oh… Maybe he’s not into dudes?”

“I know for a fact he is.” Josh was finished with his stretching. “I saw his profile on a dating app.”

“Mmh,” was all that Rick brought out.

“I tried everything. I asked about his interests. I offered to take him up for some gym training. Even offered to let him feel my muscles.”

“He didn’t want to feel your muscles?”

Josh’s shoulders dropped. “No.”

Rick narrowed his eyes. “Bro, are you sure he’s gay?”

“Bro, I’m sure,” Josh insisted. “What do you do to get a girl?”

“Flexing usually does the trick.” Rick thought for a moment. “But I heard some chicks also like men with a sense of humor. Maybe the same is true for dudes?”

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Neil went through his locker to find his Cantrip handbook. He wanted to set up some new dungeons for the coming weekend, but he must have forgotten it at Ford’s place on Saturday. He’d have to ask Ford later.

He heard footsteps next to him. He turned to see Josh.

“Hey.” Josh leaned against the other lockers, again this insufferable grin on his face. “What kind of vehicle does a body builder turn into?”

Neil hesitated but decided to see if Ford was right. “I don’t know.”

“A muscle car.”

Neil closed his locker and turned back to the jock. “Josh, are you flirting with me?”

Josh’s grin faded. “Isn’t that obvious?”

Neil was mentally screaming. Ford was right. “No, not at all, really.”

Josh rubbed the back of his neck, unsure how to continue.

“Okay, then,” Neil continued. “Why are you acting like that?”

“Like what?”

“The smugness. The grin.” Neil gestured. “All of that.”

Josh’s shoulders dropped. “I thought you’d like confidence.”

Neil took a deep breath. “I told you to leave me alone every time. What made you think I like that?”

Josh looked away and rubbed his shoulder. “I thought you were playing hard to get.”

Neil stared. This guy was quite the piece of work. But his body language revealed a different man from the one Neil knew from before. Josh’s confidence was gone, his impressive frame sinking into itself. Despite his size, in this moment, he looked smaller than Neil.

Neil wasn’t one to go on pity dates, but Josh did have a pretty hot body and if he put on a mask all this time… Who knows what kind of person Josh really was.

“All right,” Neil finally said. “Let’s go on a date, under one condition.”

“Yes?”

“From now on, I want to see the real Josh.”

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

“Wow, this is quite the house,” Neil said as he walked around the living room.

Josh and Neil had been dating for a little over a week now. Neil was skeptical at first, but under Josh’s tough act was a rather amicable guy, not the brightest but nice enough so that Neil didn’t have to feel like he was only dating Josh for his body. They had only done relatively tame stuff so far, cinema, dinner, stuff like that. Today was the fifth date and the first time they met at someone’s place.

Josh sat down on the couch and shrugged. “It’s okay.”

Neil sat down next to Josh, letting himself sink into the backrest. “So, what do you wanna do?”

“Uh, what do you usually do when at home?”

Neil found the answer confusing, but went with it. “Well, there’s not much I can do in the dorm. So usually I’m just on the internet. But I figured we’d want to do something together.”

“Right.” Josh’s face lit up as if we had an idea. “We could watch a game.”

Neil followed Josh’s eyes to the TV. “I’m not really into sports. Maybe we could watch something romantic?” Neil felt odd that he was the one suggesting something more intimate.

“Mmh… Not a big fan of romance stuff.”

Josh’s current behavior and his behavior during the last dates left Neil confused. Josh never proposed anything romantic or even sexual. It was almost as if he just wanted a friend, but that made no sense, since they were actually dating and Josh called it that as well.

But still, something was off.

“Josh, can I ask you something?” Neil asked.

“Sure.”

“Don’t get this the wrong way, but… What exactly do you want out of us dating?”

Josh was visibly confused. “What do you mean?”

“Are you looking for a boyfriend?”

“I—” Josh hesitated and looked away. “Kinda but not really?”

“What does that mean?”

Josh turned to Neil. He looked small again, one foot resting on the other, his back hunched forward. “It depends on you.”

Neil raised an eyebrow. “Why me?”

Josh stared at his feet, his toes curling and uncurling as if giving him signals. “I’m an object.”

Neil’s eyes went wide. Suddenly it all made sense.

Well, kinda.

“What kind of object?” Neil asked. “Do you already know?”

Josh blushed and it took some seconds before he answered. “A jockstrap.”

“Oh.”

Some seconds passed in silence.

“I see,” Neil continued. “You’re not sure if we’re going to be boyfriends or if I’m just your owner?”

“Yes.”

“Well, it’s a bit difficult doing some things together with your boyfriend when he’s a jockstrap,” Neil mused. “Like going out in public.”

Josh looked down at his feet but didn’t say anything.

“Would you be okay if you were my object and I had a boyfriend?” Neil asked.

Josh shrugged. “I guess so.”

“Well, there’s quite a few owners who have two partners, a fellow owner and an object,” Neil suggested. “It would be a three-way relationship, or maybe even four-way if he also has an object boyfriend.”

“Mmh.”

“I mean, as a jockstrap you would be included when me and my boyfriend are having fun. It’s like you get the best of both worlds.”

“Oh, well, that actually does sound good,” Josh smiled.

“If I even get another boyfriend,” Neil clarified. “But like, if you’re fine with both options, exclusive and shared, then I don’t see an issue.”

“No, it sounds awesome.”

“You don’t have to decide now.” Neil put a hand on Josh’s thigh. “You can think about it if that’s what you want. It’s a pretty big decision.”

Josh thought for a second. “Would you want me as an object?”

“Of course!” Neil blurted out but gathered himself. “Yeah. Yeah I think I’d like that. I’m gonna miss that body for sure, but… You’ve grown on me, you know? It’s just right you’re worn on me.” He winked.

Josh grinned from one ear to the other, but after a second it faded. “There’s one more thing.”

“Oh?”

“My dad wants to meet you.”

“I must admit I feel a little bit underdressed,” Neil commented as he sat down.

Josh and Neil organized a date with Josh’s dad, so he could get to know Neil. They met at a restaurant and while Neil appeared in a nice T-Shirt and jeans, Josh was wearing a whole suit with his father around his neck.

“Don’t worry about it,” Josh’s father said. “It’s just that casual clothing doesn’t really go well with neckties.”

Josh was not amused. He tried not to make it obvious, but he just wanted to get the ‘date’ over with soon. He opened up the menu and started browsing, while his father was talking.

The first few minutes were spent on small talk between his father and Neil. After they had ordered, his father got to the meat of the issue.

“I will be honest with you, Neil,” his father began. “Normally I wouldn’t care that much about who becomes my son’s owner, but your relationship will be more intimate and Josh will give up a lot to be your object.”

Josh rolled his eyes.

“Sure.” Neil nodded. “I understand that.”

“Do you have any objects in your family?” Josh’s father wanted to know.

“Plenty.” Neil started to count on his hands. “Two brothers, a cousin, an aunt and two uncles and both of my grandmas.”

“Mmh, that actually is quite a bit. How close were you with your brothers?”

Neil shrugged. “We lived together.”

“I see…” Josh’s father gathered his thoughts. “What do you do in your free time?”

“Well, when I’m not studying I play games, chat with friends? I regularly meet with friends to play Cantrip.”

“That pen and paper game?”

“Yes.”

“Mmh.” Josh could tell his father wasn’t very convinced yet. He was never particularly big on ‘wasting’ time on playing games. “What do you study?”

“Business sciences with a focus on macro-economics.”

“Ohh.” Josh could hear his father’s tone change drastically, the sternness gone. “What’s your current topic?”

“We’re currently covering the mid 20th century impact of morphology on international trade.”

“Did you have Wetmiller’s Theorem yet?”

“Of course. ‘Economic revolutions follow in the footsteps of new technologies.’”

“Well, that’s only a tiny part of it,” Josh’s dad added.

“But the most important one.”

“True, true.”

Josh supported his head on one hand. He was relieved his father was getting along with Neil, but he wished he wouldn’t have to be here to witness it all…

“Do you already know what you want to do when you’re done with studying?” His father asked Neil.

Neil shrugged. “I don’t have any definite plans. I was hoping to get some practical business experience somewhere and go from there.”

Josh’s dad didn’t say anything which caused Josh to look down. His dad looked up and a smile formed on his face.

Great…

“Hey, aren’t you Neil’s friend?” Josh asked.

He was currently at one of the school’s frat parties, specifically an object party. It was a tradition among many schools that the biggest frat would throw a party for all people who would become objects this semester. Naturally, only objects were allowed in, both already changed as well as yet-unchanged. Unchanged objects would wear a card-sized sleeve around their neck which had a picture of the objects they were going to be, usually a printout from the catalog.

Ford turned around to face Josh. “Yeah. I’m Ford. You’re Neil’s boyfriend, Josh?”

Josh rubbed the back of his neck. “Did he tell you about us?”

“Naturally.” Ford smirked, eyeing the image around Josh’s neck. “Oh… Neil didn’t tell me about that, though.”

“Yeah…” Josh looked at Ford’s object card. “A rubber suit?”

“A wetsuit,” Ford corrected. “I want to be a marine biologist. And this way I can team up with an owner who is also one, so we can be a researcher pair.”

“Would your face be inside?”

“What? No.” Ford pointed to the image. “My face is on the outside, on the chest. I need to see what my wearer sees.”

“Oh, right, makes sense. Do you already have an owner?”

“Mmh, kinda. I’m not going to be owned by a person, but by a research institute. And then they assign me to people as needed. But I already got confirmation from the institute.”

“Nice.”

Before an awkward pause could develop, Rick approached Josh. “Hey, bro, who’s this?”

“Ford,” Ford introduced himself.

“A friend of Neil,” Josh elaborated and then nodded at Rick. “This is Rick.”

“Ahh,” was Rick’s only reply before he changed topics. “Check this out, bro.” He pointed at the card around his neck. “I’m going to be a race car!”

Josh looked at the card which showed a black sports car with red flames painted on the sides. “Bro, that’s sick!”

“A driven car or a driverless car?” Ford chimed in.

“Umm, a driven car,” Rick replied. “Driverless cars aren’t allowed in the big races.”

“You do know that you won’t have control over your own body then, right?”

“I don’t?”

“No.” Ford shook his head. “They specifically transform you without any internal controls to prevent cheating.”

“Oh.”

“Driverless car races are less popular, sure, but they are much safer, because all cars drive themselves. There’s much fewer accidents because in a lot of ways it’s more like a run rather than a human trying to steer what is effectively a racing bullet.”

Rick frowned and looked down at the image of his car.

“You can still be that car.” Ford tried to be helpful. “Just with internal controls so you can drive yourself.”

“But then I can’t compete in the big races.”

“Well, yeah…” Ford felt bad for Rick, almost as if taking away a toy from a child because it wasn’t theirs and they didn’t even know. “But I think safety trumps popularity. There’s massive turnover in the popular races because of this, most cars becoming disillusioned with it quickly. Not to mention that despite the high turnover, there are much more applicants than spots, so chances are high you won’t get picked and then you’re stuck with a body you can’t control.”

“Bro, Ford is right,” Josh urged. “Think about it.”

Rick looked up from his card at Ford. “And I can still be this car?”

“Of course!” Ford said. “The only difference is the internal wiring. You can have any model as driven and driverless as far as I know.”

“Mmh, I guess I’ll be a driverless car then,” Rick ceded and turned to Josh. “That’s still at least 90% cool right?”

“Bro, safety is, like at least +10% cool,” Josh said. “You’ll be like 110% cool.”

Ford suddenly felt very out of place.

As if sensing Ford’s awkwardness Josh turned to him. “So, when do you get changed?”

“I still need to wrap up some things for school,” Ford explained. “But I’ll have my exams as a wetsuit already, because I’m going on an internship during the holidays.”

Josh turned to Rick. “And you?”

“I could do it anytime, but I’ll go to the counselor and see if they can help me find a racing team for driverless cars.”

“I’m sure you’ll find something,” Josh said.

“And you?” Ford asked Josh.

“Well… I’m going to make a sperm deposit tomorrow, in case I want to have children later. I have my appointment on Friday.”

“No time to waste, huh?”

“Heh, yeah.”

Rick raised his cup of punch. “To a new life as the coolest objects ever!”

“Bro!” Josh joined in.

Ford raised his cup too. “Yeah, sure.”

Josh smiled at Neil before laying down on the bed.

It was an odd feeling that the first time he was naked in Neil’s presence was when he was being turned into an object. But that was the way of things and he would very soon get to see Neil naked on a regular basis as well.

The nurses reassured Josh as they pushed the end into the machine.

Slowly the machine came to life, first as a faint hum, then as a loud hissing noise as the hydraulics did their work. Josh felt the pressure rising though he knew that the machine tried to keep the pressure constant. What he was feeling was the transformation process trying to play fast and loose with reality, warping space around him. Still, it almost felt like he was being compacted, which, fair, he kinda was.

As the noise got louder and louder, the pressure he felt increased. Eventually his vision melted like an old film reel that got stuck. Then he saw stars.

When his vision and consciousness returned, he heard the entry door open. He couldn’t move, but he felt the bed under him. Then he felt the bed getting pulled back out into the open. The nurse looked down on him but did not take further notice.

“You can pick him up now,” she said to Neil, who was still sitting on the bench.

Neil got up and walked over to the bed. His hands moved to the sides of Josh’s vision and lifted him up until his face was right in front of Neil’s.

There was a warm smile on Neil’s face. “Hey.”

“Hey.”

“You can put him on in the changing room,” the nurse interrupted the two and pointed to the room where Josh entered from earlier.

After closing the door behind him, Neil gently placed Josh on the bench and started to take off his pants and underwear.

Once his lower body was naked apart from his socks, he picked up Josh so that he was facing Neil.

Josh gulped, despite the fact he didn’t have a throat. Neil angled himself next to the mirror so that his profile was visible from Josh’s vantage point and faced Josh towards the mirror.

Finally Josh saw himself in the mirror. He was a black jockstrap with lime-green accents. His face was located on the outside of the pouch. It felt odd, but also strangely calming. That was his form now, for the rest of his life.

“Ready?” Neil asked.

Josh looked at his mirror image and then up at Neil. “Yeah.”

Neil stepped into Josh and adjusted him around his butt and crotch. “Damn, you’re comfy.”

“Perks of an object.”

Neil examined his butt and crotch in the mirror, angling his pelvis to get a better look.

“I look good on you,” Josh said, sounding almost surprised.

“You really do. How does it feel?”

“Amazing.” Josh could feel Neil’s crotch pressing against his face and his straps were hugging Neil’s cheeks as if trying to keep them contained. “I can feel everything.”

“Mind if I take you to the gym and you tutor me?”

“Dude, I would love to!”

“Awesome, ready to be covered up?” Neil held up his jeans.

“I guess so.” Truth be told Josh was a bit sad that he wouldn’t be able to see once Neil put on his pants, but he understood that Neil couldn’t walk around in a jockstrap. Josh chose this fate himself. And in a way, part of him actually liked the idea of being unseen underwear being worn in public.

Neil stepped into his jeans and peeked through his open fly. “Talk to you later.” He zipped up.

Josh was now covered in darkness. He felt Neil moving, the jeans gently rubbing against the outside of his face, and Neil’s crotch rubbing against the inside.

Yes, this was it.

This was the life he wanted.
